1st Annual Coach Squires Walk / Run
is in the Books
On June 10th the Greater Boston Track Club celebrated its 50th anniversary at Boston College, the site of its founding in 1973. The day began with over 150 GBTC Alumni and current members participating in the 1st annual Coach Bill Squires Walk/Run around the 2 mile “Res”. Jack McDonald, GBTC founder shared pictures and stories of organizing the GBTC, managing through the many financial and logistical challenges. In a short time with help of Coach Squires and support from New Balance owner Jim Davis, who had recently acquired NB in 1972, the GBTC became one of the most successful clubs nationally and internationally. Many GBTC Alumni and current members shared stories of training, memorable races and friendships. As highlight to afternoon, the inaugural “Squires Scholars” awards were presented to Samantha Seabury, Wakefield MA/BU and Robert Cannon, Quincy MA/Umass Boston. Special Thanks to GBTC leadership team and Tom Derderian for hosting event and New Balance for providing commemorative 50th anniversary tees.
